To a solution of 14.80 g (45.11 mmol) of 2-iodomethyl-1-methyl-1H-[4,4′]bipyrimidinyl-6-one in 30 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide was added 16.71 g (90.21 mmol) of potassium phthalimide. The resulting mixture was stirred at 130° C. for 3 h. After cooling, water was added and the resulting mixture was stirred for 12 h at 0° C. The precipitate was filtered, heated in ethyl acetate and the precipitate was filtered. The product was dried to give 5.3 g (30%) of pure compound as a brown solid.
