Reaction Steps

To a solution of 2-chloro-5-methyl-phenol (93 g, 0.65 mol) in CH3CN (700 mL) was added CH3I (110 g, 0.78 mol) and K2CO3 (180 g, 1.3 mol). The mixture was stirred at 25° C. overnight. The solid was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated under vacuum to give 1-chloro-2-methoxy-4-methyl-benzene (90 g, 89%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.22 (d, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 6.74-6.69 (m, 2H), 3.88 (s, 3H), 2.33 (s, 3H).
