A solution of 6-methoxy-5-(2-methyl-propenyl)-nicotinic acid methyl ester (300 mg, 1.36 mmol) in ethanol (5 mL) is added to a suspension of Pt(IV) oxide (40 mg) in ethanol (5 mL). The mixture is stirred under 1 atm of H2 at rt for 18 h. The catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is concentrated. The crude product is purified on prep. TLC plates with heptane:EA 7:3 to give 5-isobutyl-6-methoxy-nicotinic acid methyl ester (260 mg) as a colourless oil; LC-MS: tR=1.08 min; [M+1]+=224.49.
