Procedure

To a solution of (4-bromo-6-methyl-pyridin-2-yl)-methanol (3.13 g, 15.5 mmol) in acetone (400 mL), KMnO4 (6.24 g, 39.5 mmol) is added portionwise. The resulting mixture is stirred at rt for 18 h before it is filtered over a glass-filter. The filter cake is washed with water and acetone and the filtrate is concentrated and dried under HV to give crude 4-bromo-6-methyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid potassium salt (5.03 g) as a white solid; 1H NMR (D2O): δ 2.47 (s, 3H), 7.58 (s, 1H), 7.85 (s, 1H).
