Procedure
To a solution of benzyl [(1R)-1-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)ethyl]carbamate (1.10 g, 4.21 mmol) in dichloromethane (40 mL) was added 1 M boron trichloride solution in dichloromethane (21.1 mL, 21.1 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm from 0° C. to 20° C. over 4 h. The solution was quenched by 5 ml of methanol at 0° C. After warming to ambient temperature, the mixture was concentrated and the residue was washed with 100 mL of diethyl ether (2×) to give the hydrochloride salt of (1R)-1-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)ethanamine was obtained as solid (0.84 g). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD): δ 4.70-4.61 (m, 1H); 2.63 (s, 3H); 1.67 (d, J=6.9 Hz, 3H).
