To a stirred solution of ethyl 6-hydroxy-1-isopropyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-4-carboxylate (1.3 g, 5.2 mmol) in DMF (7 mL), N-chlorosuccinamide (1.11 g, 8.35 mmol) was added. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 1 h. On completion of reaction, water was added to it and extraction was carried out using ethyl acetate; the combined organic layers were washed with water, brine and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure and residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain the desired intermediate (1 g, 69.9%).
