Procedure

1-(4-Nitrophenyl)-piperazine (2.18 g, 10.6 mmol) was added to 2-chloro-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine (1.5 g, 10.6 mmol) in pyridine (10 mL) and the mixture was heated at reflux for 7 h. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was separated, washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated to afford 4,6-dimethyl-2-[4-(4-nitro-phenyl)-piperazin-1-yl]-pyrimidine (0.8 g, 24%) as a solid.
