1-(2-Cyclopent-1-enyl-2-oxo-ethyl)-2-methyl-pyridinium bromide salt (3.65 g, 12.94 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (25 mL) and hydrogenated over 10% palladium on carbon (180 mg). After completion of the reaction the Pd/C was removed by filtration through celite, washing twice with methanol. Concentration of the filtrate afforded 1-(2-cyclopentyl-2-oxo-ethyl)-2-methyl-pyridinium bromide salt (3.4 g, 93%).
