456 g (3 mol) of ethyl(3-hydroxypropyl)phosphinic acid (produced as in Example 5) are at 85° C. dissolved in 400 ml of toluene and admixed with 888 g (12 mol) of butanol. At a reaction temperature of about 100° C., the water formed is removed by azeotropic distillation to leave 524 g (84% of theory) of butyl ethyl(3-hydroxy-propyl)phosphinate purified by distillation at reduced pressure.
