Reaction Steps

To DMF (80 mL) was added potassium carbonate (5.7 g, 41.1 mmol) and methyl 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoate (5.0 g, 27.4 mmol). The mixture was cooled to 0° C. and 1-bromo-3-chloropropane (8.64 g, 57.9 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added dropwise over 30 minutes. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature overnight. After removing most of the DMF in vacuo, the remaining oil was diluted with H2O and filtered to give methyl 3-(3-chloropropoxy)-4-methoxybenzoate (6.65 g, 25.8 mmol, 94%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.61 (d, 1H), 7.47 (s, 1H), 7.09 (d, 1H), 4.12 (t, 2H), 3.85 (s, 3H), 3.80 (s, 3H), 3.78 (t, 2H), 2.23-2.15 (m, 2H); LC-MS (ESI) m/z 259 (M+H)+.
