Reaction Steps
39 g (0.21 mol) 2-chloroethyl cysteine was dissolved with 500 ml anhydrous methanol, and cooled with an ice bath. 80 ml (1.1 mol) thionyl chloride was slowly added dropwise to the solution in the ice bath. Thereafter, the reaction mixture was warmed and reacted at room temperature for 24 hours. After removing the solvent under reduced pressure, the reaction product was dissolved with anhydrous methanol (200 ml×2) and then evaporated to dryness, to remove redundant thionyl chloride. The obtained solid was recrystallized with 50 ml anhydrous methanol and 160 ml anhydrous ethyl ether, resulting in 37.5 g of a white crystal, yield 76.1%.
