Procedure
Lithium borohydride (762.5 mg, 19.4 mmol) was added to a solution of 3-[3-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-5-formyl-isoxazol-4-ylmethoxy]-isoxazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2.9 g, 8.4 mmol) in methanol (168 mL) and the resulting mixture stirred for 1 h at room temperature. Citric acid (10%, 100 mL) was then added and the resulting mixture extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. Purification by chromatography (silica, ethyl acetate:heptane=1:4 to 1:1) afforded the title compound (1.63 g, 48%) as a white solid. MS: m/e=407.2 [M+AcO]−.
