A mixture of 4,6-dimethyl-1H-indole (Cho et al., Tetrahedron, 2001, 57, 3321-3330) (93.0 mg, 0.640 mmol) and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylmethanediamine (98.0 mg, 0.961 mmol) in AcOH (3 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h. The reaction mixture was partitioned between EtOAc (20 mL) and saturated NaHCO3 (10 mL). The layers were separated and the organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound.
