To a mixture of 5-(5-ethyl-6-methoxy-2-methylpyridin-3-yl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (0.7 g, 2.9 mmol) prepared in accordance with the procedures of Step 2 as described above, potassium iodide (1.43 g, 8.6 mmol) and acetonitrile (15 mL) is added chlorotrimethylsilane (1.1 mL, 8.6 mmol) at room temperature then the reaction is heated at 60° C. for 0.5 hr. Solid product begins to form so more solvent is added to facilitate stirring. The solids are collected by filtration, washed with water, with ether and dried to afford 5-(5-ethyl-2-methyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridin-3-yl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (1.2 g, 61% yield). MS: m/e=248 (M+H).
