Potassium salt of (S)-5-Methoxy-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2-pyridyl)methylsulfinyl]-1H-benzimidazole (Esomeprazole potassium) (6.2 gm) was dissolved in water (80 ml). To this solution, was added magnesium chloride solution (1.8 gm in 50 ml water), and then the contents were stirred for 1 hour at 25° C. The solid precipitated was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum for 12 hours at 40° C. to obtain 4.5 gm of esomeprazole magnessium dihydrate (enantiomeric excess: 99.5%).
