Procedure
The mixture of 2a (0.83 g, 4 mmol), acetone cyanohydrin (4 ml) and MgSO4 (2 g) was heated to 80° C. and stirred over 2.5 h. After cooling down to room temperature, compound 2b was crystallized into water (30 ml). The solid was filtered and dried to yield {4-[(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)amino]phenyl}carbamic acid tert-butyl ester, 2b (1.08 g, 3.9 mmol, 98%).
