Procedure

A solution of ethyl 2-(5-chloro-4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)-2-hydroxyacetate (Intermediate 3-6; 1.1 g, 4.25 mmol) in thionyl chloride (3.42 mL, 46.89 mmol) under nitrogen was stirred at 80° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool concentrated and diluted with water (20 mL), extracted with EtOAc (2×20 mL), the organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to afford ethyl 2-chloro-2-(5-chloro-4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)acetate (1.170 g, 99%) as a yellow gum.
