Nitric acid (2 mL) was added to a stirred solution of indazole (5.0 g, 42 mmol) in acetic acid (40 mL) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at RT for 30 min. Acetic anhydride (6 mL) was added in one portion and the mixture was stirred at RT overnight. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by chromatography to give 3-nitro-1 H-indazole (3.4 g, 49% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d4): δ 14.46 (s, 1 H), 8.12 (m, 1 H), 7.76 (m, 1 H), 7.57 (m, 1 H), 7.48 (m, 1 H).
