Reaction Steps

A solution of 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-iodo-phenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester (3.87 g, 10.81 mmol), 1-naphthaleneboronic acid (2.79 g, 16.22 mmol), triethylamine (4.5 mL, 32.44 mmol), palladium (II) acetate (72.8 mg, 0.324 mmol), and tri-o-tolylphosphine (204.1 mg, 0.670 mmol) in dry N,N-dimethylformamide (43 mL) was heated at 100° C. under nitrogen for 1 h. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to 25° C. and then concentrated in vacuo to remove N,N-dimethylformamide. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (200 mL). The organic phase was washed with a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (1×100 mL) and water (1×100 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography (Merck Silica gel 60, 70-230 mesh, 19/1 hexanes/ethyl acetate) afforded 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-naphthalen-1-yl-phenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester (3.51 g, 90%) as a yellow oil: EI-HRMS m/e calcd for C25H26O2 (M+) 358.1933, found 358.1930.
