Reaction Steps

A stirred mixture of 2-(2-propoxybenzamido)-nicotinamide (0.77 g) and pyridine (0.8 ml) in 2 Normal sodium hydroxide (20 ml) was heated under reflux for 30 minutes. The cooled reaction mixture was neutralized with 2 Normal hydrochloric acid to afford a precipitate which together with another precipitate similarly prepared from 2-(2-propoxybenzamido)nicotinamide (0.1 g) was recrystallized from ethanol-ether to afford white needles (0.65 g) which were washed with water to afford the title compound, 0.55 g, m.p. 110-111° C.
