Procedure

A stirred suspension of N-[2,3-dichloro-4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]acetamide (D8, 1 g, 3.6 mmole) in a mixture of 2M NaOH solution and ethanol (30 ml) was heated under reflux for 36 hours. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as an orange solid (59%).
