Procedure
1.0 g (3.1 mmol) of 1,3-dipropyl-8-(5-norbornen-2-yl)xanthine are hydrogenated under pressure in 30 ml of ethanol, with the addition of palladium/charcoal, until no further uptake of hydrogen can be detected. The catalyst is filtered off, the filtrate is concentrated by evaporation and the residue is chromatographed on silica gel (Ch2Cl2 /CH3OH 99:1). 0.4 g of the title compound are obtained in the form of white crystals (39% of theory), m.p. 136°-138° C.
