Procedure
4-Sulfonamidophenylhydrazine hydrochloride (4.35 g, 19.4 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 3,4-dihydro-6-methoxy-2-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethylidene]-1(2H)-naphthalenone from Step 1 (5.06 g, 18.6 mmol) in ethanol (100 mL). The reaction was heated to reflux and stirred for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered and washed with ethanol to give the desired pyrazole as a white solid (6.97 g, 88%): mp 277°-278° C.; 1H NMR (acetone d6) 300 MHz 8.09 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H) 7.80 (d, J=8.9 Hz, 2H) 7.00 (d, J=2.6 Hz, 1H) 6.78 (m, 3H) 6.69 (dd, J=8.7 Hz J=2.6 Hz, 1H) 3.81 (s, 3H) 3.04 (m, 2H) 2.84 (m, 2H); 19F NMR (acetone d6) 300 MHz -62.43 (s). Mass Spectrum M+ =423.0838.
