Procedure

19.5 g (88 mmol) of methyl 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-epoxybutyrate are dissolved in 200 ml of absolute methanol, and 0.1 ml of boron trifluoride etherate is added. Stirring is carried out for 12 hours at room temperature and the solvent is distilled off. The residue is taken up in ethyl acetate and the solution is washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and water and dried over sodium sulfate. After the solvent has been distilled off, 21.1 g of a slightly yellow oil remain.
