Reaction Steps

Concentrated hydrochloric acid (2 drops) was added to a solution of (3β,5α,25R)-3-ethoxymethoxy-spirostan-6-one (0.70 g, 1.43 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (10 mL). The mixture was stirred under nitrogen atmosphere and heated to 62° C. After 15 minutes, the reaction was cooled to 0° C. and neutralized with 15% sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo then diluted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water (2×), brine (1×), dried (sodium sulfate), concentrated in vacuo and purified by flash chromatography (1:1 hexane/ethyl acetate) to afford 0.55 g (89.4%) of the title compound as a colorless solid.
