Procedure

9b (9 g) was dissolved in ethanol (150 ml) and 5% Pd/C (2.0 g) was added. The mixture was treated with 3 atm. of H2 gas for 36 h. Filtration and removal of solvent gave 1-(2-hydoxyethyl)-5,5-dimethylimidazolidin-2-one as an oil. Yield: 5.1 g.
