A solution of the crude 1-azido-N-(2-benzyloxyethyl)cyclopentan-1-carboxamide 12a (22.3 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) was added to a suspension of LiAlH4 (6 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml). After reflux for 2 h the mixture was cooled to 0° C. and subsequently treated with water (6 ml), 15% aqueous NaOH (6 ml) and water (6 ml). The mixture was filtered and the precipitate extracted with dichloromethane (200 ml). Drying of the combined organic phases (MgSO4) and evaporation of the solvents in vacuo afforded the title compound as an oil: 18.7 g.
