A mixture of 1.51 g (6 mmol) of anthracene-1,9-dicarboxylic acid anhydride and 0.4 g (6.5 mmol) of ethanolamine in 50 ml of toluene is refluxed for 5 hours and then cooled to room temperature. The solid is filtered, dried and crystallized from toluene to give 1.5 g (85%) of 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,2-dihydro-3H-dibenz[de,h]isoquinoline-1,3-dione. M.p. 211° C.
