Reaction Steps

Dissolve 3-[(phenacyl)carbethoxymethyl-amino]-2-carbethoxy-4,6-dichloro-1-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-indole (0.4 g, 0.71 mmol) in methylene chloride (6 mL) and add, by dropwise addition, trifluoroacetic acid (6 mL). Stir for 3.5 hours and pour slowly into saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate (100 mL). Extract with ethyl acetate and dry (MgSO4). Evaporate the solvent in vacuo and recrystallize the residue (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (0.28 g, 85%); mp 139°-40° C.
