To a solution of (2S,3R,4R,5S,6S)-2-[4-chloro-3-(4-ethoxy-benzyl)-phenyl]-6-iodomethyl-tetrahydro-pyran-3,4,5-triol (2.5 g, 4.82 mmole) in dry methanol (20 mL), sodium methoxide (2.58 g, 48.2 mmole) was added at 0° C. and stirred at 45° C. for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with DCM (2×200 mL). The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (1% methanol in DCM) to furnish 1.6 g of (2S,3R,4R,5S)-2-[4-chloro-3-(4-ethoxy-benzyl)-phenyl]-6-methylene-tetrahydro-pyran-3,4,5-triol.
