Reaction Steps

A mixture of (5-fluoro-2-methylindol-1-yl)acetic acid methyl ester (0.14 g), 3-(thiophene-2-sulfonyl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (0.12 g) and dichloroethane (5.0 mL) at 0° C. was treated dropwise with a mixture of triethylsilane (1.4 mL), trifluoroacetic acid (0.35 mL) and dichloroethane (2.0 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was cooled to 0° C., diluted with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and the phases separated. The aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane and the combined organic solution was dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with a mixture of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate (1:0 to 1:1 by volume), to afford the title compound as a yellow solid (0.17 g).
