Procedure
To a 0° C. solution of methyl 5-{[5-(4-acetylphenyl)-6-chloro-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]oxy}-2-methylbenzoate (50 mg, 0.115 mmol) in MeOH (2 mL) was added NaBH4 (6.5 mg, 0.172 mmol). The mixture was warmed to rt and stirred for 15 min. Water (5-6 drops) was added and the mixture was concentrated. The residue was partitioned between Et2O and water. The aqueous phase was extracted with Et2O. The combined ethereal extracts were washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated to afford the desired product, which was used in the next step without further purification.
