Procedure

A mixture of 1H-pyrazol-3-amine (12 g, 144 mmol, Fluka Chemie AG) and phthalic anhydride (21.39 g, 144 mmol, Fluka Chemie AG) in 1,4-dioxane (200 ml) was heated at reflux for five days and allowed to cool to room temperature. The solid was filtered and washed with ether to give the title compound as an off white solid (22.44 g); LCMS: (System 3) MH+=214, tRET=0.67 min.
