A solution of sodium chlorite (59 mg; 0.65 mmol; 5.5 eq.) and sodium dihydrogenphosphate (51 mg; 0.43 mmol; 3.6 eq.) in water (1 mL) was added to a mixture of 2-methyl-2-butene (0.13 mL) and 4-[3-(5-fluoro-2-methoxyphenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl]-2′-methylbiphenyl-2-carbaldehyde (46.2 mg; 0.12 mmol; 1 eq.) in dioxane (1 mL) and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The suspension was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The aqueous phase was acidified to pH 3-4 with acetic acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phase was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (43 mg; 89%) as a white solid.
