To a 500 mL four-necked flask equipped with magnetic stirrer was charged 250 mL of toluene. The toluene was heated to 34° C. To this was added a toluene solution of 0.038 g (1.4 mmol) of polymethylaluminoxane composition based on aluminum atoms. Bis(n-butylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride ((nBu-Cp)2ZrCl2) was added to achieve an Al/Zr mole ratio of 5,000. While raising the temperature to 40° C., ethylene gas was blown in. After 10 minutes, the ethylene gas feed was halted and methanol was introduced to deactivate the catalyst. The polyethylene produced was filtered and dried. The polymerization activity was calculated to be 140×106 g-PE/mol-Zr·atm·hr. The polymer obtained was in the form of smooth microparticles that did not adhere to the reaction apparatus following polymerization.
