Procedure

Dissolve 1,8 diaminooctane (28.8 g, 0.2 mol) in ethanol (250 mL). Add acrylonitrile (27 mL, 0.41 mol) and gently reflux the mixture overnight. Remove the solvent under reduced pressure to provide N,N'-bis-[2-(cyano)ethyl]-1,8-diamino-octane.
