(E)-4-[1,3 Bis(cyclohexylmethyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-2,6-dioxo-9H-purin-8-yl]cinnamic acid (from step (d) example 1, 560 mg, 1.13 mmol) was shaken with 10% palladium on carbon (500 mg) in DMF (100 mL) under hydrogen (30 psi) in a Parr apparatus for 6 h. Catalyst was filtered off (Celite) and volatiles evaporated in vacuo. The residual oil was solidified from DMF, filtered, dissolved in 1N sodium hydroxide, and then reprecipitated by addition of excess 1N hydrochloric acid. Such a sample was filtered, washed with water and dried to give title compound as a white powder, m.p. >300° C.; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6) consistent with structure.
