Procedure
4.6 g of bromine are introduced slowly at about -5° C. into a solution of 4 g of 4-acetyl 3,5-dimethyl benzonitrile, prepared according to the method described in J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans. II, p. 943-949 (1988),in 10 ml of diethyl ether and 5 ml of dioxane. The mixture is allowed to attain room temperature, and after it has been stirred for 1 hour 15 ml of a saturated solution of ammonium chloride are added to it. The organic phase is separated and the solvent is removed under reduced pressure to give 4.8 g of the desired product. M.p.=76° C.
