Procedure
Thionyl chloride (0.44 mL, 6.0 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of 2,3-dimethoxy-6,7-dimethyl-5-hydroxymethylquinoxaline (0.50 g, 2.0 mmol) in toluene (30 mL) and pyridine (0.81 mL, 10.0 mmol) under nitrogen at 5° C. After 20 minutes, water (20 mL), and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×20 mL). The combined organic solutions were washed with 2M hydrochloric acid, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification of the residue by flash chromatography (eluting with dichloromethane) gave 5-(chloromethyl)-2,3-dimethoxy-6,7-dimethylquinoxaline (0.18 g, 34%) as a pale yellow solid.
