Procedure
A solution of 3-6 (580 mg, 1.6 mmol), 1N NaOH (3.1 mL, 3.1 mmol), and CH3OH (8 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 1.0 h. The reaction was then concentrated and the resulting gum acidified with 1M NaHSO4. The aqueous layer was saturated with NaCl and then extracted with ether. The extracts were combined, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give 3-7 as a viscous gum. Rf 0.20 (silica, 9/0.5/0.5 CH2Cl2/CH3OH/HOAc).
