Reaction Steps

To a stirred solution of Ethyl 3-hydroxy-2-methylbenzoate (Step A, 3.1 g, 17.22 mmol). K2CO3(3.09 g, 22.38 mmol) in dry DMF (15 ml) was added 2,6-Dimethylbenzyl chloride (3.19 g, 20.66 mmol) at room temperature under argon. The reaction mixture was stirred for 16 hours, diluted with EtOAc (40 ml), washed with water (20 ml) and brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column (hex:ethyl acetate 4:1) to give the title compound as a white solid.
