Procedure
tert-butyl 4-(1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-8-yl)benzylcarbamate (935 mg, 2.6 mmol) was dissolved in acetone (15 ml) together with iodine (68 mg, 0.26 mmol). The mixture was stirred at reflux temperature for 4 hours and at room temperature for 72 hours. The mixture was partially evaporated and then diluted with CH2Cl2 (50 ml). The organic phase was washed with NaHSO3 (50 ml, sat aq), water (50 ml) and brine (50 ml) followed by drying over MgSO4 and evaporation. The product was purified by flash chromatography using pet.ether/EtOAc (3:1) as eluent to give 475 mg (60%) of the title compound as clear syrup.
