A mixture of 5-[3-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-5-((E)-styryl)-isoxazol-4-ylmethoxy]-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (2.0 g, 4.5 mmol), osmium(VIII) oxide (28.6 mg, 0.11 mmol), sodium metaperiodate (3.85 g, 18 mmol), benzyltriethylammonium chloride (418 mg, 1.8 mmol) in dioxane (30 mL) and water (10 mL) was irradiated in the microwave for 15 min at 120° C. Extractive workup (ethyl acetate/water) was followed by drying of the organic phase over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. Purification by chromatography (silica, heptane:ethyl acetate=4:1 to 1:1) afforded the title compound (1.2 g, 72%) as a colourless gum. MS: m/e=371.1 [M+H]+.
