Reaction Steps
Methyl 2-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)isonicotinate (5.663 g, 19.44 mmol) was suspended in MeOH (20 mL) and hydrogen chloride (1.25 M in MeOH, 40 mL, 50.00 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 min and then evaporated in vacuo. The HCl salt was suspended in MeOH (100 mL) and platinum(IV) oxide (0.221 g, 0.97 mmol) added. The mixture was hydrogenated in a Büchi hydrogenator at room temperature and 5 bar for 2 h. The catalyst was filtered off and washed with MeOH. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo yielding methyl 2-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)piperidine-4-carboxylate hydrochloride (5.84 g, 90%) as a white solid. MS m/z 298 (M+H)+
