Methyl 2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)isonicotinate (2.62 g) was dissolved in MTBE, then HCl (4 M in dioxane, 15 mL) was added. The solvents were evaporated to give methyl 2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)isonicotinate hydrochloride (2.94 g, 9.68 mmol), which was dissolved in MeOH (40 mL) and platinum(IV) oxide (0.220 g, 0.97 mmol) added. The resulting mixture was hydrogenated in a Büchi hydrogenator at room temperature and 5 bar for 1 h. The catalyst was filtered off, washed with MeOH and the eluate evaporated yielding methyl 2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)piperidine-4-carboxylate hydrochloride (2.75 g, 92%) as a brown solid.
