Procedure
5.6 g (0.03 mol) of 2-(4-methylbenzylidene)cyclopentanone was dissolved in 30 mL anhydrous acetonitrile, treated with 8.4 g (0.09 mol) of N,N-dimethyl-methylene ammonium chloride under refluxing, refluxed for 12 h to yield a solid product, then suction filtered and dried, and recrystallized in acetonitrile/chloroform to yield 2-(4-methylbenzylidene)-5-dimethylaminomethyl-cyclopentanone hydrochloride with a yield of 75.2%.
