6.3 G. of 4-chloro-5-cyano-2-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidine are reacted in 275 ml. of 50% dioxane with 23.9 g. of pre-treated zinc dust and worked up after the reaction in a manner analogous to that described in Example 13. There is obtained 5-cyano-2-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidine as colorless crystals having a melting point of 102.4° C. (smectic); nematic at 126.9° C; clearing point at 129.5° C.
