Procedure
24.3 g (0.1 mol) of 4methoxy-5-n-butyl-6-chloro-2-picolinic acid dissolved in 250 ml of methanol are hydrogenated in the presence of 2.5 g of 5% strength palladium on charcoal. After the calculated amount of hydrogen has been taken up, the catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness. It is freed of the moisture which still adheres, by means of toluene. The white crystals are digested in ether and filtered off. 2-Carboxy-4-methoxy-5-n-butyl-pyridine hydrochloride of the formula ##STR12## and of melting point 176° is thus obtained.
