Procedure

A mixture of methyl 2-[4-[(2-propyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)methyl]phenyl]cyclopentane-1-carboxylate (530 mg, 1.41 mmol), 1N NaOH (2.8 mL), and MeOH (5.0 mL) was heated under reflux for 6 h. The mixture was concentrated, diluted with water (10 mL), and extracted with ether (discarded). The aqueous phase was neutralized with 1N HCl (2.8 mL) and the white precipitate was collected by filtration. Recrystallization from EtOH gave 320 mg (63%) of product, mp 179°-180° C.
