Thieno[2,3-b]pyrazine-2,3(1H,4H)-dione (1.00 g, 5.95 mmol) was reacted with fuming nitric acid (0.374 ml, 8.9 mmol) in acetic anhydride following the procedure outlined in example 4 (Method F). The crude product (655 mg) was recrystallized from acetic acid to afford 325 mg (26%) of the title compound. M.p.>300° C. 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6, δ): 7.58 (s, 1H), 12.1 (s, 1H), 12.62 (s, 1H).
